Print Competition: Requirements for Entering
Note: only SEWPPA members may submit images for Print Competition.
There are three (3) specified categories:
1) “Photographic Open” which consists of Portrait, Illustrative, Wedding, and Album entries (CD and/or traditional albums with a minimum of 20 album images).
2) “Commercial” which consists of Commercial and Industrial entries.
3) “Electronic Imaging” which consists of entries that have been sourced, composited, manipulated, and/or produced by digital means.
- Each member may bring up to a total of six (6) entries per category. Keep in mind that in order to be eligible for “Photographer of the Year” and “Electronic Imager of the Year” a minimum of six (6) entries must be submitted in each category. These entries must be printed photographs. No image files will be allowed.
- Any subject matter is acceptable. However, no two entries may be of the same subject.
- Image files that have been previously submitted for ICE or re-worked by the maker can be submitted for this competition judging as PRINTED PHOTOGRAPHS ONLY.
- Photographic print entries must be permanently mounted on a 16″ x 20″ standard mount material (e.g. 3x mat board, gator board, 1/4″ foam or sintra). No Masonite, glass, stretcher, or conventional frames are allowed.
- The photograph itself may be less than 16×20 and any shape, but must be mounted on the above mentioned mount material. Minimum total area size of the photograph must not be less than 80 square inches.*
- Mounted print thickness shall be 1/8″ to 3/8″.
- All entries must have titles, name of maker, and specified category (Photographic Open or Electronic Imaging). Labels to be put on the back of your mount board are available from the Print Chairperson or can be downloaded from the SEWPPA website (www.sewppa.org).
- The Maker’s name may not appear on the front of the print.
- Include an image file of each printed entry (approximately 4×5 @250 ppi) for possible use in publication in the SEWPPA newsletter and/or website.
*PPA Master of Photography degree holders may submit images of any shape and size on a mount board a minimum of 80 square inches to a maximum of 480 square inches, with the largest dimension no longer than 24″.
Suggestions:
- If mount board is not already dark, it is recommended that the edge be darkened with a black magic marker (unless image is high key).
- Keep in mind that the illumination levels for actual print judging necessitates that prints be printed a little darker (about 10%-15%) than normal room display density.
- Please refer to “The Twelve Elements of a Competition Print” elsewhere on this website for help in choosing which of your photographs would be best to submit.
